Despite its name, Fleet Week San Diego 2016 runs from September 3rd through October 1st. It’s a collection of public events that honor, celebrate, and thank our military. San Diego has over 100,000 active duty military, the largest concentration of military in the world. These are just a few Fleet Week events happening all over San Diego.
Fleet Week Sea & Air Parade
The Sea & Air Parade, happening September 10th, is a live demonstration of SEAL and Coast Guard Search and Rescue demonstrations and a display of amphibious ships, destroyers, frigates, submarines, and landing craft. Watch it along the waterfront from Shelter and Harbor Islands, the Embarcadero, Coronado, and South Bay. Free ship tours will be held September 10-14.
Fleet Week Coronado Speed Festival
The Coronado Speed Festival is an exciting weekend of car racing and exhibitions along the live runway used by the U.S. Navy. The festival takes place September 17-18 at Naval Air Station North Island.
MCAS Miramar Air Show
The famous Miramar Air Show is the largest military air show in the country. This year’s theme is “Celebrating 100 Years of the Marine Corps Reserve.” The event will take place September 23-25 at MCAS Miramar and is free to the public.
Fleet Week Cabrillo Festival
Celebrate Juan Cabrillo, the first European to land on the West Coast, on October 1st at Ballast Point, Naval Base Point Loma. A live re-enactment is the highlight of the festival, along with Folkloric performances, cultural demonstrations, educational activities, and a sampling of traditional Mexican, Native American, Portuguese, and Spanish food.
