Saint Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center is a scenic destination set in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It operates year-round, hosting group events such as conferences, retreats, camps, and family gatherings in a quiet and peaceful setting.
His Eminence Metropolitan Anthony, the elected bishop of the Greek Orthodox Diocese of San Francisco, founded the property back in 1979. His aim was to create a place that could provide spiritual programs for the youth and community of the diocese. Father John Bakas, a young priest, supported Bishop Anthony’s mission and reached out to a friend who owned a large piece of land just outside of Sequoia National Park. The Kossaras family, who owned the land, embraced the Bishop’s dream and readily donated the 180-acre plot to the Diocese.
It immediately became a center for youth camps, retreats, and events. The ranch eventually grew from 180 acres to nearly 300, and the beautiful conference and retreat center took shape. Metropolitan Anthony completed his vision by opening the Monastery of the Holy Theotokos the Life Giving Spring. It’s a spiritual oasis of Orthodox Christian worship, set on a hill overlooking the ranch.
